The Touching Prayer, Der Voghormia
Yet again, another extremely touching, haunting Armenian prayer. Der Voghormia means Lord Have Mercy composed by Gomidas Vartabed. When the Turks were rounding up the intellectuals in Istanbul, they say Gomidas Vartabed began singing this hymn. The Turks stopped as he sang and could only stare and listen (1,2).
The lyrics are:
Der voghormia. (x4)
Amenasoorp Yerortootyun, door askharhis khaghaghootyun.
Yev hivantatz pujhushgootyun, nunchetselots arkayootyun.
The translation:
Lord have mercy. (x4)
All Holy Trinity, give peace to the world.
And healing to the sick, heaven to those who are asleep.
When i was checking Komitas Vartabed on the internet i came by a performance of adhan (ezan) arranged by him. I am not much of an expert in music but i can say that this version of adhan has a calmer tone than the current one being in use. Here i put a link to where i found it.
